A plan to rework a busy Gordon County intersection moved a small step closer to reality this week, as commissioners approved funds for a required traffic study at the site.
Commissioners Tuesday night approved a request from Public Works to approve a task order with EXP ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Services Inc. for an intersection improvement traffic study at Dews Pond Road and Lovers Lane.
“As we know, the traffic is bad there, and it keeps getting worse,†County Administrator Jim Ledbetter said. “The question really is, do we need a roundabout, do we need a traffic light, how are we going to get right of way — itÐÔÊӽ紫ý quite a complicated intersection.â€
The study cost is not to exceed $40,000, and will be paid for using budgeted 2024 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax dollars. The project is in cooperation with the City of Calhoun, with the two bodies using the same engineering firm, as the city works to redesign the adjacent Dews Pond at Curtis Parkway intersection.
“We’re now totally coordinated with Calhoun to make sure we get the best traffic flow possible,†Ledbetter said, adding that the interstate bridge will be a “bottleneck†that neither Calhoun or Gordon County has any control over. “That is a major project, outside the scope of our jurisdiction. That would be a GDOT request.â€
Other business
In other business, Valerie Robbins was appointed by commissioners to serve the remainder of the unexpired term of Brittany Griffin on the Historic Preservation Commission through June 1, 2027.

Also from Public Works, a request was approved by the board for Georgia ÐÔÊӽ紫ý of Transportation Fiscal Year 2025 Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant Safety Action Program, requiring a 30% match not to exceed $120,000. This action will require a budget amendment.
According to Ledbetter, the funds would be used for projects such as replacing damaged guard rails, road striping, and high-friction pavement at problem intersections.
Another request from Public Works was also approved for the purchase of one Bush Hog 4110 mower from Smith Family Farm Equipment LLC at $21,850.
Finally, a memorandum of understanding concerning a national opioid settlement with Purdue was approved. The amount due to the county is not yet known, and will be determined by the State of Georgia.
