WOODVILLE – The Woodville Panthers snapped their three-game losing streak Friday with a historic 35-8 football win over the Gaylesville Trojans in a Class 1A, Region 6 contest.
Woodville beat Gaylesville for the first time in school history after losing the first 10 meetings with the Trojans (1-5, 0-3). The Panthers (2-4, 1-3) also won their first-ever game on homecoming.
A team racked by critical injuries all season, WoodvilleÐÔÊӽ紫ý success was sparked by the return of key starters like Justin Ball and Nick Baker.
Ball played quarterback, while Baker played running back and receiver.
Ball rushed for 12 yards and completed 8-of-12 pass attempts for 54 yards with a touchdown. He also had eight tackles on defense and recorded two sacks.
Baker completed one pass for 25 yards, rushed six times for 25 yards and two touchdowns, and had five tackles on defense.
Jose Montesdeoca rushed for 60 yards and one touchdown. He also caught three passes for 22 yards and a score.
Angel Montesdeoca had 14 carries for 60 yards. On defense, he had five tackles plus he scored a touchdown by stripping the ball from an opposing running back and returning it 60 yards.
Sophomore quarterback Brayden Stordahl led an injury-riddled Trojans by completing 4-of-6 pass attempts for 65 yards and a 41-yard touchdown to senior fullback Landon Lawson. Lawson also led the Trojan ground game with 50 yards on 14 carries.
Seniors Joseph Lewis and Will Smith posted 10 tackles apiece on defense for Gaylesville. Senior Keith McGraw made eight stops. Stordahl also had an interception.
Gaylesville seeks to end its five-game losing skid on Friday when it hosts Valley Head. Woodville travels to Appalachian.
