SAND ROCK – Things looked promising for the Sand Rock Wildcats early in the first half of their Class 2A, Region 6 football showdown with top-ranked Fyffe. However, the Red Devils pulled away in the second half for a 42-7 victory to end the Wildcats’ four-game winning streak.
“The kids played hard,†Sand Rock head coach Steven Chesnut said. “The game was close at halftime, but we had a couple turnovers and let the second half get away from us.â€
As Chesnut said, the two teams battled to a 7-all tie at the end of the first quarter. Fyffe (6-0, 4-0) struck first on Will MashburnÐÔÊӽ紫ý 82-yard touchdown toss to Dakota Dalton. Andrew DunstonÐÔÊӽ紫ý extra point gave the Red Devils a 7-0 lead with 4:51 left in the first quarter.
The Wildcats (4-2, 3-1) struck back with their own big-play touchdown – a 52-yard connection from Jansen Alexander to Bradon Carver. Josh Sarratt booted a successful PAT to tie the game at 7 with 2:19 to go in the opening quarter.
Fyffe would score on its next drive with a 4-yard rush from Mashburn, and the Red Devils struck again just before halftime with another 4-yard rush from Mashburn, putting the Wildcats down 21-7 at halftime.
Sand Rock struggled to find its footing in the second half, as FyffeÐÔÊӽ紫ý running game got stronger and stronger.
Dilan Kilpatrick led the Red Devil ground attack by collecting 174 yards on 24 carries, including a 4-yard touchdown with 5:46 remaining in the third quarter. A Seth Benefield 12-yard touchdown pass to Mashburn helped close out the third quarter with Fyffe in front 35-7.
Payton Anderson added a 43-yard score early in the fourth quarter for the final.
Alexander led the Wildcats by completing 13-of-25 pass attempts for 181 yards and a touchdown. Carver collected six catches for 95 yards and the Wildcats’ lone touchdown. Tanner Clanton led the Wildcat ground attack with 47 yards on 12 carries.
“Fyffe has a really good team, and they’re No. 1 in the state for a reason,†Chesnut said.
“We’re going to look at film and correct some mistakes. We try to get better each week.†Next week we’ll load up, head to Section and see what we can make happen.â€
