The motto “To serve and protect†has taken on a bigger meaning for Logan Shelton.
A two-year officer with the Polk County Police, Shelton turned a call responding to a homeless mother and her teenage daughter into a personal quest to help someone in a tough time.
Because of his compassionate and extra acts, Shelton was recognized at the Polk County Board of Commissioners’ January meeting as the 2024 Polk County Employee of the Year.
After getting a call from Polk School District officials last year, Shelton responded and handled the situation with the mother before purchasing a hot meal for the family, and even helping the mother to get a job.
He continued to follow up with the family, helping them to feel at ease by extending grace and understanding. After the visit, he secured the family a generator, refrigerator, and an electric stove.
Shelton, who was also named the countyÐÔÊӽ紫ý November Employee of the Month, has been an invaluable asset to the department, according to his superiors.
“Many of our officers do these acts of kindness daily and never ask for any recognition because thatÐÔÊӽ紫ý not what itÐÔÊӽ紫ý about,†Detective Brandy Brady said. “Officer Shelton, as young of a police officer as he is, shows great maturity and compassion for this fellow man in the performance of his job.â€
“He is truly a selfless, big-hearted, and genuine guy,†Chief Kiki Evans said. “I’m so pleased to say that he works with me and at the Polk County Police ÐÔÊӽ紫ý.â€
The board of commissioners created the Employee of the Year award to honor one employee that has been recognized by their coworkers as one that completes work task to the best of their ability, while also creating a positive workplace environment.
Shelton was presented with the award by Polk County Human Resources Director Nendra Wofford during the boardÐÔÊӽ紫ý work session on Tuesday, Jan. 7.
