In the wake of recent severe storms across parts of the country, authorities are advising local residents to beware of donation scams.Â
“A terrible storm system recently impacted the American Midwest, in which a series of devastating tornadoes tragically resulted in a number of deaths and catastrophic property damage," Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston said. "We recommend donating to well known and established local charitable organizations, such as our churches and our own civic organizations, for storm relief efforts.â€
Ralston said he knows the generosity of Gordon County citizens, and doesn't want to see their kindness taken advantage of.
"We have had our share of tornadoes, so we know how badly a community can be affected, and the people who live in our community are compassionate, kind, and giving," Ralston said. "Please do not fall victim to telephone scammers looking to profit off the misery of the folks who are suffering."
A note for the editor
Online sites such as and have ratings and information that may help citizens make a decision, while longstanding organizations like the Red Cross are usually a safe way to donate when disaster strikes.
