If you’re looking for some extra fun for the start of your summer, you might find it at the library!
The Calhoun-Gordon County Public Library is located at N. Park Ave., and is open 10 a.m. to 6 pm., Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays. To preregister for any activities or for more information, call 706-624-1456.
The library will be closed on Thursday, June 19, in honor of Juneteenth.
Summer Reading Challenge
The summer reading challenge is in full swing, having kicked off on May 19. With this yearÐÔÊӽ紫ý theme, Color Our World, the program will challenge kids, teens, and adults alike to read throughout the summer for a chance to win prizes! There is a different challenge for each age group, which runs from May 19 through July 11.
To be eligible to enter the grand prize drawing, participants must complete the challenge by reading and logging the required amount of time and activities for their age group.
Kids (birth through grade 5): Read or be able to read to 12 hours. No book reviews are required for kids. For kids not yet reading, being read to counts.
Teens (grades 6 through 12): Read 16 hours.
Adults (ages 18 and older): Read 16 hours.
Grand prize winners in each age group will be notified by July 30. Prizes and certificates can be picked up between July 30 and Aug. 30. For registration, go to and click on “register an individual or family,” fill out the information and then submit to select your challenge.
Weekly Activities
On Mondays, adults can get a morning move on with Workout with Nancy, an exercise class led by Nancy Guzman. Class starts at 10 a.m.
Chess Club is also held on Mondays, at 4 p.m. for anyone interested in growing their chess skills!
NoniÐÔÊӽ紫ý Nook takes place every Tuesday, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Noni picks a theme each week and will read stories, sing songs, and provide crafts for kids, ages birth through 5th grade.
Also on Tuesdays, there will be a Teen Tabletop Tuesday, with a new theme each week focusing on a different game. The themes are: Magic The Gathering on June 3, Yu-Gi-Oh on June 10, Pokémon Club Evolved on June 17, and Lorcana on June 24.
On Wednesdays, Nancy Guzman will lead yet another exercise class — stretchband workout. Join her for a morning workout with bands starting at 10 a.m.
Those (18+) interested in board and card games can visit the library every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. to spend some time with other game enthusiasts.
Also at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, there will be an adult-only English Conversations session, taught by ESOL instructor Zach, for those hoping to strengthen their English speech.
Every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. there will be a Baby Lapsit, where new parents are welcome to come learn about communicating and reading with their babies ages birth to 2.
Teens can join the library for Dungeons and Dragons each Thursday at 4 p.m. for two hours of rolling dice and dicey accents.
On Fridays, veterans (age eighteen and up) will have a chance to get together at the libraryÐÔÊӽ紫ý Veterans Coffee Hour starting at 10:30 a.m.
Also on Fridays, there will be a Movie & Activity held each week at 2 p.m., with the exception of Friday, June 20. Friday, June 6, is a movie and activity for teens and tweens as well as new adults, while Fridays June 13 and June 27 are reserved for teens and tweens, grades 6-12.
There will be a STEAM Storytime held on each Saturday this month, each on with a different theme. Themes are: Salad Spinner Art on June 7, Exploding Art on June 14, Shadow Art on June 21, and Natural Tie-Dye on June 28.
All-Age/Family
On Monday, June 2, Adam Sanford will be at the GEM Theatre for Art with Adam. The session begins at 11 a.m. and has the purpose of giving children a unique drawing experience and exploring their creativity with an interactive program.
Readers of all ages will have the opportunity to sit and read with a therapy dog at this monthÐÔÊӽ紫ý Paw Pals, on Friday, June 6, at 4 p.m.
On Tuesdays, June 10 and June 24, at 11 a.m. there will be a ÐÔÊӽ紫ýschool Meetup, allowing homeschoolers of all ages to have some fun together at the library.
There will be a Writing Class with William F. Burk on Wednesday, June 11, at 3 p.m. Burk will share his tips and techniques for writing graphic novels and other works.
In need of grief support? Know someone who needs it? Visit the libraryÐÔÊӽ紫ý Grief Support Group Tuesday, June 24, at 4:30 p.m.
There will be a ÐÔÊӽ紫ýschool Hands-On session on Thursday, June 26, at 11 a.m. for homeschoolers of all ages to participated in a variety of activities.
ChildrenÐÔÊӽ紫ý Events
On Tuesday, June 3, the library will host a Storytime with Pilot Cary Brown from 1-2 p.m. Cary will read stories about the career of being a pilot.
Two Kids Paint with Whitney will be held this month, one on Thursday, June 5, for ages Pre-K through 2nd grade, and the other on Thursday, June 12, for ages 3rd through 5th grade.
On Monday, June 9, there will be a Puppet Show with Gene Cordova at the GEM Theatre at 11 a.m. Cordova is a ventriloquist and comedian who will make children laugh out loud while helping them to discover the adventure of reading.
WhatÐÔÊӽ紫ý that Pokémon? Pokémon Club will be hosted at the library Monday, June 9, starting at 4 p.m.
There will be a Visit from Firefighters on Thursday, June 12, at 4 p.m. where local firefighters will be on hand to show off their truck and gear, and to answer questions.
On Monday, June 16, at 11 a.m. there will be a Storytime with Babatunde. Kids can enjoy a magical journey filled with colorful stories, plus singing and dancing!
The GEM will be hosting an Animal Adventure on Monday, June 23, where kids can come and meet exotic animals and learn fascinating facts about their food, habitats, and adaptations.
There are two tail-wagging events being held at the library on Friday, May 20. The first is a Decorating Dog Treats session at 3 p.m., followed by an Afternoon with Pups at 4 p.m.
There will be a Treasure Hunt hosted at the Calhoun Recreation ÐÔÊӽ紫ý on Wednesday, June 25, at 10 a.m.
The final GEM Theatre event of the month will fall on Monday, June 30, with a Magic Show with Brian Roberts at 11 a.m.
Teen & Tween
From 2-3 p.m. on Monday, June 2, there will be a Diamond Painting session for anyone 6-12th grade.
Get ready for an epic NERF battle at the libraryÐÔÊӽ紫ý Tween NERF Wars, taking place on Wednesday, June 4, at 6 p.m. Teen NERF Wars will take place later in the month, on Monday, June 16, at 6 p.m.
Teens can learn to crochet at LetÐÔÊӽ紫ý Crochet, a session being held at the library on Thursday, June 5, at 11 a.m.
On Friday, June 6, there will be a Movie & Activity with Roberta at 4 p.m. during which teens and tweens as well as new adults can watch a movie and then enjoy a curated activity.
Tweens and Teens can learn how to make their own lava lamps at a DIY Lava Lamp class on Monday, June 9, at 2 p.m.
A teen edition of Crafting with Roberta will be on Thursday, June 12, at 2 p.m. with cardboard art on the agenda, and again on Wednesday, June 25, with a class on making recycled art.
A STEM: Chromatography class will be held on Monday, June 16, at 12 p.m. Open to ages 6-12 grade, teens and tweens can learn a science experiment of separating substances in a mixture.
The Family Resource Center is hosting a Teen Talk: No Cap for teens and tweens, covering social and emotional life skills. This mini-session will be held on Wednesday, June 18, at 12 p.m.
Any teen or tween feeling artsy can join in on this monthÐÔÊӽ紫ý Tie-Dye Bandanas class, where they will have the opportunity to create their own personalized bandana with all supplies provided. This event will be held on Monday, June 23, at 1 p.m.
On Monday, June 30, at 12 p.m. teens and tweens will have the opportunity to get together and make Friendship Bracelets.
Adult Programs
Ready to test your knowledge? On Friday, June 2, at 4 p.m. Zach will be hosting an adultÐÔÊӽ紫ý Trivia session to put your brain to the test.
At 10 a.m. on Tuesdays, June 3 and June 17, as well as Saturdays, June 14 and June 28, is the libraryÐÔÊӽ紫ý adult Knit and Crochet Club.
Paint with Whitney will hold an adults-only class on Thursdays, June 5 and 12, at 10:30 a.m. for those feeling artsy.
On two Fridays this month, June 6 and June 20, adults can get moving and participate in a Zumba class, which runs from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Roberta Charbonneau will host two adult Crafting with Roberta classes on Monday, June 9 and Wednesday, June 18, both at 1 p.m.
For those still young at heart, there will be two Adulting Is Hard sessions at the library this month. The first is a Functional Clay Art class for new adults on Wednesday, June 11, at 12 p.m. The second session, Making Food Fun and Feasible, is also for new adults and is on Wednesday, 25, at 3 p.m.
In addition to the usual ESOL classes, the library will also host a Pictionary for English Learners on Friday, June 13, at 4 p.m.
Get in tune with your balance and get your body stretched out with a Stretch and Balance Workout with Nancy, on Fridays, June 13 and June 27, at 10:30 a.m.
The library will offer its English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course for all stages of learning on Saturdays, June 14 and June 28.
Adults can join in on Art with Emily, an hour-long art class, on Wednesdays, June 18 and June 25, at 3 p.m.
The adults will have their own chance at some fun with the Adult NERF Wars held at the library on Saturday, June 21, at 1:30 p.m.
Life Skills with Angela is returning to the library this month on Wednesday, June 25, at 1 p.m. Join lifestyle coach Angela Coney for an afternoon information.
Book Clubs
The Shelf Indulgence Book Club of the month will be held on Friday, June 27, at 11 a.m. The topic of this month will be Beach Reads.
This monthÐÔÊӽ紫ý Staff Picks a Book Club will also be held on Friday, June 27. This monthÐÔÊӽ紫ý book club pick is “Under the Wave at Weimea†by Paul Theroux.
