With the beginning of Atlantic hurricane season this month, potential disasters can put a strain on the regional blood supply.
The Red Cross will host several blood donation opportunities across the area through the end of June to help sure up the blood supply in cases future donation drives are impacted by summer severe weather.
“Even when hospitals are fully stocked with blood products, sudden events can cause a rapid drop in the availability of lifesaving transfusions,†said Keeta Bell with the American Red Cross in Georgia. “While many may be engaging in outdoor adventures this month, the Red Cross asks people to continue making and keeping donation appointments a part of their June plans.â€
Especially needed are the donations of rare blood types.
“Blood has a shelf life of 42 days, which means ongoing donations are key to ensure medical needs are met,†Bell said. “Type O blood donors are especially needed as the summer season continues.â€

Bartow
♦ June 24 — Cartersville Civic Center♦ , 435 W. Main St., noon to 5:30 p.m.
♦ June 28 — Atco Baptist Church — Cartersville♦ , 20 Parmenter St., 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
With Saturday being World Blood Donor Day, and June 19 World Sickle Cell Day, the Red Cross is asking that area residents join in honoring those days by making a donation.
