An early morning domestic dispute call to a Gordon County gas station led to a shooting and chase that ended in an apparent suicide, according to police.
According to Calhoun Police ÐÔÊӽ紫ý reports, around 4 a.m. Thursday, officers responded to a report of a domestic dispute that involved a man holding a gun to a womanÐÔÊӽ紫ý head at Buc-eeÐÔÊӽ紫ý, 601 Union Grove Road.
The woman was reportedly able to make her way inside the store and call for help, but when officers arrived and tried to detain Robert Smith as a suspect, he fled on foot and shot at officers. A child with the woman had also been involved in the incident, according to a report.
“During the pursuit, the suspect turned and fired multiple shots at pursuing officers,†Chief Tony Pyle said. “Fortunately no officers were injured.â€
Smith then carjacked a truck from the Buc-eeÐÔÊӽ紫ý parking lot and led multiple agencies in a chase northbound on Interstate 75.
During the chase, Smith — who was reported from Chattanooga — continued firing at officers through the car window.
According to Whitfield County Sheriff Darren Pierce, deputies from his office picked up the pursuit after locating the truck on Chattanooga Road near interstate Exit 336, where Smith continued firing at deputies. After 3 miles, Smith lost control of the truck, crashing close to mile marker 339.
“When deputies finally approached the vehicle, the offender was discovered to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head,†Pierce said.
According to Pyle, the investigation is ongoing and no further details are being released at this time.
“Calhoun Police ÐÔÊӽ紫ý extends thanks to all assisting agencies and is grateful that no officers or civilians were harmed during the incident,†Pyle said.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting with the investigation.
