MONTGOMERY— Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded an $800,000 grant to make highway travel safer in Alabama by taking dangerous drivers off the roads.
The grant to the Alabama ÐÔÊӽ紫ý of Public Safety will permit an increased presence of state troopers at locations that have experienced a high number of roadway crashes and other traffic violations, including speeding and impaired driving.
“An increased number of troopers on the road translates into a reduced number of drivers who disregard our traffic safety laws,†Bentley said. “I urge motorists to always obey traffic laws, drive defensively and report unsafe drivers, even when law enforcement officers are not apparent.â€
The grant will enable troopers to work extra hours and conduct high-visibility traffic enforcement measures including driver checkpoints and increased patrols. Troopers will focus many of their increased patrols around major holidays when the volume of traffic is highest.
Bentley notified Col. Hugh B. McCall, Public Safety director, that the grant had been approved.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration provides the state with funding and the Alabama ÐÔÊӽ紫ý of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant.
ADECA manages a wide range of programs that support law enforcement, economic development, workforce development, recreation, energy conservation and water resource management.
