Polk County residents will have three chances to attend public hearings on a tentative millage rate increase by the county board of education.
The school board has announced its intent to adopt a millage rate of 15.00 mills for this year, an increase of 1 mill over last yearÐÔÊӽ紫ý rate. That would increase property taxes by 13.16% over last yearÐÔÊӽ紫ý taxes, according to the school district.
The districtÐÔÊӽ紫ý rollback rate would be 13.256 mills based on the tax digest if the increase is not adopted.
All concerned residents are invited to public hearings Wednesday, July 23, at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the board of educationÐÔÊӽ紫ý meeting room at 612 S. College St. in Cedartown.
An additional public hearing will be held Tuesday, Aug. 12, at 4 p.m. during the boardÐÔÊӽ紫ý regular August meeting. It is expected to vote on the adoption of the millage rate during the meeting.

According to the school district, the proposed tax increase for a home with a fair market value of $225,000 would be approximately $153.47, and the proposed tax increase for non-homestead property with a fair market value of $125,000 would be approximately $87.20.
The increase would bring in approximately $26.4 million to the school district, a little more than $2.5 million over last yearÐÔÊӽ紫ý maintenance and operations tax revenue.
The M&O tax revenue, which is collected through property taxes, is one of the main revenue sources for the schoolÐÔÊӽ紫ý annual budget.
Tax assessments went out to county residential property owners earlier this year that listed the fair market value of their property as well as a total tax based on estimated millage rates. The school district millage rate was estimated at 16.00 mills, which is higher than the tentative rate put forward.
Local governments, such as Polk County and municipalities, have yet to advertise their proposed millage rates for 2025 but are expected to do so over the next few months.
