With a new venue secured, planning is already well underway for a second annual free community Thanksgiving event in Calhoun, and more financial and volunteer support is needed to make it a success.
Organizers with the second annual “Feeding the Needy Calhoun†event have set a time and location for a community-wide dinner meant especially for those with nowhere else to go, or nothing else to eat on Thanksgiving.
Scheduled for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Thursday, Nov. 27, at the Calhoun First United Methodist Church Activities Center, 205 E. Line St., the event will feature a free, traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey, plenty of sides, and desserts.Â
Just like last year, meals will be available on Thanksgiving to be eaten on site while enjoying the fellowship of fellow community members, and carry-out plates will also be available. The 2024 event saw a large turnout, with over 500 meals served, around 65 volunteers, as well as a host of individual, business, and organizational donors making the day possible.Â
Besides a meal, last year's event also saw the handing out of free clothing, and free haircuts, as well as take-home food boxes.Â
An idea conceived by lifelong Calhoun resident Walter Harris, the annual event is a tribute to his late parents James and Lula.
"We have someone to cook them, but we're currently in need of committed turkey donations, other volunteers, and of course monetary help," Harris said. Â
Love donations can be sent to Feeding the Needy, 120 Yarbrough St., Calhoun, GA, 30701, with checks made out to Walter Harris, with “Feeding the Needy Calhoun†in the note field. Donations can also be made at $WALTERHARRIS22 via CashApp. Volunteers to help set up and serve at the event are also welcome.
For more information about the event, how to help, or making a donation, call Harris at 706-263-4584.
