Catoosa and Walker homeowners can appeal new property assessments and apply for homestead exemptions to get extra 2025 tax savings under HB 581.
Property taxes aren’t due in Catoosa or Walker counties until December, but there are a few bits of information people might find useful in advance.
New property assessments went out recently: June 9 in Catoosa County and June 24 in Walker County. ÐÔÊӽ紫ýowners have 45 days from these dates to appeal the assessment of their property and also to file for homestead exemptions.
Thanks to House Bill 581, which District 3 state Rep. Mitchell Horner helped to draft, every property owner who has a homestead exemption is eligible this year for an extra exemption. There is no need for these property owners to take any action to get the extra exemption.
If homeowners do not have a homestead exemption on their primary home, the one in which they live, they can apply for one by the deadline and also be eligible for the special exemption for 2025.
The deadline to file for a homestead exemption is July 24 in Catoosa County and Aug. 8 in Walker County.
HB 581 exemption
House Bill 581, also known as the “Save Our ÐÔÊӽ紫ýs Act,†is many-faceted, but for this year, what it does is it gives an extra exemption based on a homeÐÔÊӽ紫ý 2024 assessment versus its 2025 assessment.
The difference between those two assessments (if 2025 is higher) is the extra homestead exemption. There are exceptions, including home improvements that increase an assessment (additions, for example).
Also, there is a limit to the amount of property included in the extra exemption — up to five acres, with some exceptions that can limit the exemption to two acres.
HB 581 includes future savings by tying the amount a property can be taxed to the inflation rate, but for this year, whatÐÔÊӽ紫ý important is for people to be sure they have whatever homestead exemptions they’re eligible for by the appropriate deadlines so they can save on property taxes and also get the HB 581 exemption.
