The Georgia ÐÔÊӽ紫ý of Transportation is suspending lane closures on interstates and state routes for the July 4th holiday period and offering some travel tips.
The holiday travel period runs from noon Thursday, July 3, through 10 p.m. Sunday, July 6. Crews may still be working in a few places and some closures may remain in place for safety or emergency reasons. Motorists in an active work zone must slow down and move over one lane when possible.
Be aware that weather conditions can impact travel. Rain increases crash risk by 60%, and extreme heat (over 90 degrees) causes a 20-30% increase in road debris, such as tire blowouts.
In metro Atlanta, expect heavier traffic near popular tourist destinations such as Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Botanical Garden, Six Flags Over Georgia and Zoo Atlanta.
Based on travel last year, thereÐÔÊӽ紫ý the potential for heavier than normal congestion on metro Atlanta interstates on Thursday and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m. Traffic is likely to be lighter on Friday.
Express lane schedules are subject to change based on traffic conditions, although no changes are expected for the Northwest Corridor.
For major interstates outside of metro Atlanta, expect moderate congestion on I-75 and I-24 near Chattanooga, Tennessee. The I-75 section between Atlanta and Stockbridge will likely be worse than normal. Other areas with the potential for traffic jams are I-16 near Savannah; I-475, I-75 and I-16 near Macon; I-75 near Valdosta and I-95 near Florida.
Several cities in the state are hosting special holiday events that could affect travel patterns. They include Lawrenceville, July 2: Savannah, July 4; Augusta, July 3-4; and Atlanta — the AJC Peachtree Road Race — July 4.
