The numbers don’t lie.
African American men experience significant health disparities that lead to higher numbers affected by everything from heart disease to prostate cancer.
According to the National Institute of Health, the statistics are startling and for the 100 Black Men of Rome-Northwest Georgia, it was a call to arms.
The Health Initiative for Men was started about 20-plus years ago offering free screenings that included prostate exams, which are more prevalent in Black men.
Larry G. Morrow Sr. was one of the organizers of that first health fair and said about 32 participants showed up for the free event, at the time held at the Fielder Gym in East Rome.
It was initially a challenge from the organizationÐÔÊӽ紫ý national chapter as a means of improving health outcomes for men of color.
“We were issued a challenge from our national organization as part of one of our cornerstones, which is health and wellness,†Morrow said. “Luckily, we were ready for it.â€
The initiative has grown in size and impact throughout the years, averaging about 300 attendees a year, and Morrow said its value in the community cannot be overstated.
“We’ve come a long way,†Morrow said. “It kind of made a name for itself. This is a signature event.â€
H.I.M. plus Women returns Aug. 16 from 8 a.m. to noon and has expanded to two floors at the Floyd County Health ÐÔÊӽ紫ý, 16 E. 12th St., and now includes screenings for women as well.
The organizationÐÔÊӽ紫ý president, James Lee, said providing critical services for marginalized men and women is a core mission.
“ItÐÔÊӽ紫ý something we’re proud of,†Lee said. “This community event brings together men and women of all ages to focus on health, wellness, and education. Attendees can take advantage of free health screenings, learn from experts, and enjoy a welcoming atmosphere. With vendors, educational resources, and freebies, itÐÔÊӽ紫ý a great day for families and friends to engage in activities that promote well-being and personal growth.â€
With the help of community partners such as Atrium Health Floyd, AdventHealth Redmond and the Northwest Georgia Cancer Coalition, Lee said the effort to serve those who have historically been ignored is something the organization is proud to organize. The goal is to continue to work to meet the needs of the community.
“We want to make sure itÐÔÊӽ紫ý beneficial for everybody,†Lee said.
